Is there anything worse than having to shovel a few feet of snow from your driveway and sidewalk? Between the cold, wet conditions and the knowledge that you’ll only have to do it again and again, it’s no wonder that nobody wants to do it. While snow blowers can make the job a bit easier, nothing is as easy, convenient and fun as using your ATV with an attached snow plow. And using your ATV to clear snow gives you an excuse to ride year round.

For an ATV that is already equipped with a winch, a snow plow can be attached relatively easily. In most cases, the plow is attached directly to the winch, allowing it to be moved up and down using the winch control switch. Most reputable ATV dealers will be able to supply you with a plow that can be attached to the existing winch. These dealers can also help show you what’s available for your current ATV set-up.

For those that do not have a winch currently attached to their ATV, there are other options available. In most of these cases, a plow with a manual lift is commonly recommended. Manual lifts are usually designed to mount to the rear of the ATV, creating a counterweight to the plow blade up front. A lever is used by the driver to raise and lower the blade as needed. The lever is normally in a position that can be easily accessed by the driver.

Another popular option for those without a winch is to purchase an aftermarket electronic lift system. These systems are easily installed on just about any ATV. They use a compact electric motor designed with a high-degree of torque which is connected to a steel cable. The controls are mounted on the handlebars for easy access and control the motor through an appropriate wiring harness. While theses systems are definitely more convenient than using a manual lift, they also tend to be more expensive. When purchasing one of these systems it is essential to do so through a reputable ATV dealer. Break downs and poor results are often caused by inferior electronics, which are common to off-brand electric motors. Because of this, it is very important to make sure that your system includes a manufacturer or dealer warranty in case of a break down.

The snow plow blade is the most essential piece of the plow system, manual or electronic. Cheap plow blades will inevitably become damaged, even under modest working conditions, which is why it’s important to buy quality from the start. Plow blades should be made from a heavy-gauge stainless steel to ensure a lifetime of dependable service. Blades typically range from just under four feet to just over six feet in length. The correct size will depend on your particular ATV and the requirements of the work. They are also available in a variety of curvatures. The different curves create a different “throw” during the plowing process.

If you are a snow skier, having safety equipment is crucial. Avalanche beacons may be expensive, but it will save your life, if you happen to be burried under snow.
